One could describe the music of Way, Shape, or Form as digital glitter looped with syncopated, intricate guitar parts inspired by the yesteryears of video game soundtracks and math rock. The project based out of Richmond, Virginia has been the ambitious, electronic dream of musician Troy Gatrell for close to ten years. A project that has gone through a number of arrangements over it’s musical lifespan. At times, the project has taken on the life of a four-piece rock outfit that explores uncharted sonic terrain through every venture. In alternate iterations, Gatrell has effortlessly recreated the lush textures of Way, Shape, or Form compositions as a solo musician with a number of looping and sample resources at his disposal. Way, Shape, or Form knows no boundaries and that sentiment goes even further with the release of a new EP entitled Nixed Emotions via Richmond record label Egghunt Records.
The fifth release for this Richmond artist expands on the styles found on previous releases and embraces Gatrell’s devoted penchant for writing in the key of Pinback, Tortoise and Minus The Bear. Over five songs, he explores a number of territories that will be sure to surprise and impress new and familiar audiences alike. On “Infinite Loop,” an intricate beat lends itself to a steady cadence of deliberate rhythms and nuanced guitars. The hushed vocals warm the listener’s ears as Gatrell confesses to subtle attempts at hiding setbacks and confronting shortcomings. With “Soft Reset,” the enchanting grooves will quickly remind listeners as what drew them to the genre in the first place.
In all of the past Way, Shape, or Form recording experiences, the process behind Nixed Emotions is quite unique. Gatrell was approached by organizers from the Richmond branding agency Release The Hounds and Richmond record label Egghunt Records to partake in a new project they had in mind. A musical incubator that Gatrell would occupy for a month in the hopes of recording a new release in the time spent in this space. As the premiere project for what would be called The Soundview Project, Gatrell was able to set the bar even higher for the prolific artist.
With the release of Nixed Emotions, Way, Shape, or Form hopes to continue working towards creating a stable homestead among listeners in the very unique niche that Gatrell’s songwriting occupies.
